Marketing Messages Matter In State AG Consumer Protection

In Law360 Stephen Cobb, Maria Colsey Heard and Hannah Cornett Land discuss how state AGs’ broad consumer protection mandate leads to close scrutiny of marketing communications.

Hannah is an associate in the State AG Group and represents a wide range of clients facing investigations brought by state attorneys general, the Federal Trade Commission and the National Advertising Division, an independent self-regulatory agency established by the U.S. advertising industry to build consumer trust in advertising and support fair competition in the marketplace.

Hannah’s clients include start-ups, trade associations, and Fortune 100 companies spanning the hospitality, technology, pharmaceutical, software, automobile, manufacturing, and retail industries. She advises consumer-facing businesses on building relationships with state AG offices and other regulatory agencies in advance of potential scrutiny. Should a client come to the attention of a regulator, she counsels through every step of the investigation process, from discovery and settlement negotiations, to, where necessary, litigation and appeals. She is currently representing several clients in ongoing data breach investigations led by state attorneys general and has a detailed understanding of the protocols and procedures involved in defending these investigations with a view to minimizing impact on business operations and reputational damage.

In addition, Hannah maintains an active pro bono practice, and recently secured medical retirement and tuition reimbursement for a wrongfully discharged naval veteran. Hannah has also represented clients seeking asylum in federal immigration court.

While in law school, Hannah was a summer associate at the firm. Prior to that, Hannah was a legal intern for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight & Government Reform and the U.S. Office of Special Counsel Retaliation & Disclosure Unit. Hannah also worked with the Kentucky State Auditor on a rape kit reform initiative.

Hannah earned her bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, from the University of Kentucky and she earned her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center, where she was an editor of The Georgetown Journal of Gender and the Law and participated in Georgetown’s Civil Rights Clinic.
