Stop Matching and Start Connecting: How Cozen O’Connor Has Fostered Organic Mentoring

July 9, 2026

Leigh Ann Benson McGeever, director of career development at Cozen O’Connor, authored an article in the July/August 2026 issue of the NALP Bulletin examining how law firms can foster meaningful mentoring relationships by creating opportunities for authentic connection rather than relying on traditional mentor matching programs.

In the article, “Stop Matching and Start Connecting: How Cozen O’Connor Has Fostered Organic Mentoring,” Leigh Ann discusses several firm initiatives designed to encourage relationship-building across the organization, including the Cozen Coaches program for lateral associates, the Cozen Cohorts mentoring initiative, and the firm’s Outstanding Mentor Award. Drawing on participation data, stay interviews, and lawyer testimonials, she explains how these programs have helped cultivate a culture where mentoring develops naturally through professional connections and shared experiences.

According to Leigh Ann, the most effective mentoring programs focus less on formal assignments and more on creating environments where lawyers feel connected, valued, and supported. She notes that meaningful mentoring is ultimately driven by a mentor’s willingness to invest time in teaching, listening, and collaborating with colleagues.
