NYC Council Passes and Introduces Legislation

Last Thursday, the NYC Council convened a Stated meeting, where they passed and introduced multiple pieces of legislation. The Council passed legislation requiring an annual report on the Permanent Affordability Commitment Together (PACT)’s impact on NYCHA resident, and a report on sickle cell disease among NYC public school students. The Council introduced a bill that would require third-party food delivery services to provide workers with additional information regarding their pay calculators. Bills were introduced creating a task force on squatters in the City, and establishing a screening program for endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome. The Council introduced a bill increasing the threshold for review of contracts outside an agency procurement plan from $200K to $1M. SBS Commissioner to Resign

Kevin Kim, the Commissioner of NYC’s Department of Small Business Services, announced that he will step down from the position. Kim has served as Commissioner for over two years, and will be leaving the role at the end of June. The Mayor has not announced his replacement yet or commented on Kim’s resignation.

Pilot Program to Combat Retail Theft

Mayor Adams announced the launch of a new pilot program to combat retail theft. The program will enable businesses to voluntarily share their security camera footage with the NYPD. The platform, Fusus, will allow businesses to integrate their security cameras with the local precinct, and notify local police if an incident occurs. The program aims to facilitate faster and more efficient investigations, and promote community engagement between business owners and NYPD on issues of public safety.
