How Pennsylvania Women Can Achieve Equal Pay

Kathy Jaffari co-authored an article published in The Philadelphia Inquirer discussing the wage gap in Pennsylvania and the steps that need to be taken to narrow it. Kathy and her co-author, Judy Berkman, are co-chairs of the Women’s Rights Committee of the Philadelphia Bar Association.

It was announced last week that the U.S. women’s soccer team will now receive equal pay to the men’s team, which brings the wide pay gap in other professions to light, including the legal field. According to a Women’s Law Project study, women in Pennsylvania will not achieve equal pay to men until 2072. 

“It’s 2022. Something so common sense as equal pay should stop being such a struggle.” Kathy and Judy write.

Kathy and Judy propose that Pennsylvania begin to address this pay inequality by updating the Pennsylvania Equal Pay Act and increasing the minimum wage. The pay gap can be narrowed further by banning salary history questions during the job application process and increasing compensation transparency.
