Gregory Fliszar and Ryan Portugal co-authored an article examining the arguments for and against psychologists obtaining prescription privileges for psychotropic drugs and a look at the five states that have granted such privileges to psychologists. The movement to grant psychologists the right to prescribe psychotropic medication started over 50 years ago when the American Psychology Association (APA) identified psychopharmacology as a discipline for psychology. Since that movement began, the APA has encountered stiff opposition from physician groups, including without limitation, the American Psychiatric Association.
