Ken Fisher discusses alternative classroom solutions for New York City public schools as the system continues to struggle with how to safely bring students back to school during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many schools are considering outside classrooms in parks, playgrounds, and other public facilities. However, these spaces come with limitations and potential legal and security issues. Ken addresses the possibility of New York public schools using sports stadiums and open-air arenas— which are largely sitting unused — as an option due to the facilities’ layouts offering much needed features such as restrooms, adequate seating, dining options, access to public transportation, and open field space. Although the facilities could not accommodate all students, the option would prove to be invaluable for students who require in-person learning, including those who come from families of essential workers.
