The simple answer is to take this issue seriously not only because the law requires it, but also because disability discrimination cases can be expensive to defend, and the risk of a large jury award is always present. Once an individual with a disability requests accommodation or if the need for an accommodation is obvious, an employer must engage in an interactive process to determine if a reasonable accommodation can be made without creating an undue hardship or posing a direct threat to the health or safety of the individual or others.
