Bill to Ban Plastic Straws & Limiting Ride Sharing Services

The New York City Council did not hold any hearings this week, and will have a light schedule planned for next week. In the press, Council Speaker Corey Johnson offered his support for bill to ban plastic straws in food and beverage establishments operating in the city. The speaker also added that the final version of the bill should consider the needs of the disabled population who often rely on straws to consume beverages. The New York Times reported on Thursday that city officials and the council are moving forward with legislation to put a limit on the number of vehicles operated by ride sharing services operating in the city. The proposal would discontinue the issuance of for-hire vehicle licenses for one year, with exceptions for vehicles that are wheelchair accessible, while the city conducts a study of the industry. The city contends that the for-hire vehicle industry has contributed to major traffic congestion and lower wages for drivers.

Mayor de Blasio in Staten Island

Mayor de Blasio spent the week in Staten Island as a part of the "City Hall in Your Borough" series. The Mayor with Staten Island Borough President James Oddo made several announcements throughout the week, including the addition of 1,000 new public school seats in the borough through the city's acquisition of a former private school. Mayor de Blasio was on hand at a ribbon cutting to open a new NYC Health + Hospitals Community Health Center. The new 18,000 square foot health center will expand primary care, as well as offer mental health and opioid addiction services. During the week, the Mayor and BP also announced a Tick Control Initiative aimed at reducing cases of Lyme Disease, the expansion of dockless bike share pilot program, and targeted improvements to Tompkinsville Park. New city funding was also announced for improvements to the 9/11 Postcards Memorial. In the coming weeks, the Mayor and his administration will spend a week based in Queens, the Bronx and Brooklyn, using this time to meet with community members and elected officials to gain a better insight on the specific needs of each borough.
