Employer Wariness of Gen Z May Spur Age Bias Claims

Monday, February 5, 2024

Debra Steiner Friedman was quoted in a Law360 article highlighting the increase in age-biased complaints from young workers, urging employers to avoid age discrimination. A recent survey by ResumeBuilder.com revealed that almost a third of workplace decision-makers avoid hiring Gen Z candidates due to doubts about their professional and interpersonal competencies, with some expressing a preference for older applicants. Debra asserted, "I would suggest that all employers should be cautious about stereotyping based on age, the same way you should be cautious about any stereotyping."

Despite concerns raised in the survey about Gen Z candidates asking for high salaries, displaying entitlement, and lacking communication skills or preparedness, Debra contended that none of those problems sound particularly new. “You’re going to experience that when you interview candidates for jobs. And I don't think it’s unique to Gen Z. But those are valid reasons, when somebody shows lack of skills or not fitting their job requirement, whether it's salary or something else." She reiterated the importance of evaluating candidates based on merit rather than age.
