The 2023 Philadelphia mayoral election will be held on November 7, 2023. Nominees for the Democratic and Republican parties will be selected through primaries on May 16, 2023. Jim Kenney, the incumbent Democratic mayor, is term-limited and cannot seek reelection to a third term.
Former Philadelphia City Council member David Oh is the Republican candidate, while eight very different Democratic candidates are vying to be the city's 100th mayor.
Having so many would-be mayors in the mix is overwhelming to even the most engaged citizen. That is why Philadelphia Magazine, “with insights from a plugged-in panel of experts and interviews with the candidates themselves,” put together a Philadelphian’s guide to the primary. Among the experts was Public Strategies Senior Principal Joe Hill, who previously served as PA political director, deputy campaign manager for Governor Tom Wolf, and deputy political director for Hillary Clinton’s PA campaign.
