As Garment District Landlords Clamor for Resi Conversions, Others Say Not So Fast

Ken Fisher is quoted in Crain’s New York in an article discussing the fate of the Garment District, located in Midtown Manhattan, as City Council continues to hold hearings to determine if the city should use commercial vacancy to create more housing.

Building owners are bringing attention to the fact that commercial area has fewer residents per acre than anywhere else in New York’s five boroughs. “The Garment District is the logical place for conversions to start, since it has been artificially underutilized by zoning rules,” Ken stated.

Advocates for the Garment District share concerns that the conversions may be a detriment to the fashion businesses located in the neighborhood and could potentially force out the nearby theater industry.
