Leni Cummins discusses the push to mandate the COVID vaccine for public-facing employees such as doormen and concierge throughout New York City in New York Magazine’s Curbed. Under federal Equal Employment Commission guidelines, employers have the right to bar employees who refuse to get vaccinated. Although the union is encouraging doormen to get vaccinated, it is supporting those members who opt out.

Leni, who has drafted vaccination policies for a handful of condominium and cooperative boards that she represents, thinks a vaccination mandate for door staff was a “no-brainer” decision for many. “Boards seem pretty unified in wanting to require them [doormen and concierge] to be vaccinated,” Leni said.

Despite this, boards continue to struggle with whether or not they should include medical or religious exemptions that are permitted into their policies. Leni also sees the potential for issues related to vaccine mandates for third-party vendors hired by residents.
