Self-employed started applying for unemployment benefits Monday, but there’s a catch

Jeremy Glenn was quoted in the Chicago Tribune discussing how it is complicated for states to set up systems for awarding assistance to the self-employed during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s a product of the complexity of the system, and the number of people who would apply,” said Jeremy. “Nothing like this existed before.” The federal coronavirus relief act was signed into law March 27. It took the federal government another week to provide guidance to states on assistance for the self-employed, and states then had to determine how to evaluate claims.
