Leni Cummins comments on Governor Andrew Cuomo’s pocket-veto of a bill that would remove a property tax abatement from condominium and cooperative homeowners in larger buildings in which building service workers did not receive prevailing wage in an article in The Real Deal. Under the bill, owners of units valued at $60,000 or more would be ineligible for a 17.5 percent reduction on their annual property tax bill unless they certified that building employees were paid a prevailing wage. Many opposed the bill, arguing that smaller buildings may struggle to pay the wages.

According to Leni, “The bill had very deeply concerned co-op and condo boards, which felt that by either committing to pay prevailing wage, or forgoing the abatement, could hit homeowners’ wallets.”
