Councilman: Resume land-use reviews – but just for Rikers

Friday, May 15, 2020

Ken Fisher discusses New York City Council Member Costa Constantinides’ request for the city to restart its land use review process for the Rikers Island Public Place Mapping amid the COVID-19 pandemic in The Real Deal. The land use action would ensure the closure of Rikers in 2026. The request urges the use of telecommuting technology to immediately address the fate of Rikers, although there is no apparent reason for the urgency.

According to Ken, resuming the review process for all projects — not just Rikers — would be more logical, providing construction jobs and helping New York’s economic recovery.

“Approving projects, reaffirming that the city is confident in its future I think will send a powerful message that needs to be delivered,” he said.
