Ken Fisher comments on New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s order to the Department of City Planning to study implementing a special permit for developing hotels in New York City in the New York Post. Under the policy, developers who are considering new hotel construction would undergo an extensive review and approval process, even if the land is zoned for commercial and hotel use. The policy would give the New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council leverage that critics view as a political move by the mayor to gain the union's support for his presidential bid.
“This is a political decision by the mayor, not a land-use decision,” said Ken. “That doesn’t mean that it’s a quid pro quo,” he added. “[De Blasio] believes that union membership for hotel workers is a path to the middle class, and their political and ideological interests line up on this issue.”
