Cozen O'Connor attorneys Julie Trester (Labor & Employment) and Corey Hickman (Commercial Litigation), in the firm's Chicago office, won asylum for a 21-year old Mexican mother and her children. Julie and Corey worked tirelessly on the pro bono case for nearly two years, along with the National Immigration Justice Center. In a Chicago Daily Law Bulletin article, they share their perspectives on the case, the procedural aspects involved, and how they were able to work around the June 2018 opinion by former Attorney General Jeff Sessions that stood as a major barrier to granting asylum. While Julie and Corey did most of the legal heavy lifting, their case garnered support throughout the Chicago office, from other attorneys to paralegals to staff members, and from a local church - Pentecostal Church of Harvey, Illinois. Julie's bilingual legal assistant Tina Rodriguez even served as a translator for their Spanish-speaking client.
