Kendall Hayden of the Global Insurance Department discusses new technology in the trucking industry, which is on of the "5 Roadblocks Facing the Trucking Industry." The other roadblocks are training drivers under new standards, regulating drivers' sleep habits, defending against mounting litigation, and contending with competition.
New technology in the trucking industry includes electronic logging devices that would keep track of how many hours drivers are on the road to help ensure they take their required rest breaks, as well as introducing so-called speed-limiters on certain heavy-duty trucks. Kendall said there's plenty of debate as to whether limiting speed will help reduce or eliminate speeding by trucks in what the ATA has called "one of the biggest contributions to accidents."
