Struggles with Employment Law – The Multi-Edged Sword of Compliance Issues for Nonprofits

Date & Time

Start Date: 05/25/2017
Start Time: 11:30am
End Time: 12:30pm

John Ho, chair of Cozen O’Connor’s OSHA practice, and Ethan Kahn, a partner at Mazars, will be presenting this webinar on employment law. Nonprofits and government funded agencies are unique employers and businesses due to their extensive oversight and auditing exposure from numerous sources. They must simultaneously comply with a host of regulatory agencies and laws that may include the Department of Labor, the IRS, the NYS Education Department, the Office of the State Comptroller, and the newly formed Nonprofit Corporation Law under the Nonprofit Revitalization Act. These regulations cover employment practices, workplace policies, funding, ethics, and other compliance issues.

Mistakes can cause exposure to nonprofits and significant liabilities on many different fronts. Common compliance issues arise from wage and hour practices, employee classification, anti-discrimination, retaliation and whistle-blowing issues, joint employment, cell phone usage, recordkeeping, and social media. John and Ethan will discuss these compliance issues from their respective backgrounds both legal, auditing, and quality assurance and provide participants with strategies to identify and practically resolve these overlapping issues facing nonprofits.
