Nonprofits and government funded agencies are unique employers and businesses due to their extensive oversight and auditing exposure from numerous sources. They must simultaneously comply with a host of regulatory agencies and laws that may include the Department of Labor, the IRS, the NYS Education Department, the Office of the State Comptroller, and the newly formed Nonprofit Corporation Law under the Nonprofit Revitalization Act. These regulations cover employment practices, workplace policies, funding, ethics, and other compliance issues.

Common compliance issues arise from wage and hour practices, employee classification, anti-discrimination, retaliation and whistle-blowing issues, joint employment, cell phone usage, recordkeeping, and social media.
